Release Therapy is a bonus level in Manhunt 2 where you play as Leo Kasper. It is unlocked by achieving at least 3 stars in every stage in the PC version. On the PS2/PSP release, this level is unlocked after completing the final mission Personality Clash. It is considered the Bad Ending of the game, as this mission is what if Leo, the main antagonist, was ultimately victorious instead of Daniel Lamb during the climax of Manhunt 2.

The opening cutscene is the same as in Personality Clash when Dr. Whyte informs Daniel about what happened to his wife and that he apparently murdered her under Leo's command. The level begins with Dr. Whyte informing Daniel about a cell in the deepest corner of his mind and tells him to lock up Leo in that cell forever. But, Leo manages to escape by luring a Legion Hunter into the cell and killing him. Every kill or execution Leo makes against the Hunters protecting Daniel's mind gives him more power. He searches for Daniel in the mansion and eventually finds him, before ultimately killing him in the final showdown, therefore destroying his personality. The level ends with the final cutscene of Dr. Whyte waking "Daniel" up in his cell in Dixmor Asylum and stating that she decided to remove the Pickman Bridge which was what was controlling "Daniel"'s thoughts while he was in his coma. Dr. Whyte then leaves "Daniel" in his cell under his request and he goes to wash his face only to see Leo in his reflection, confirming that Kasper's mission to completely take over Daniel's mind has been accomplished.

Script[]

(Dr. Whyte tells Daniel about the cell in his mind.)

Dr. Whyte: There is a cell, hidden away in the darkest recesses of your mind. Lock Leo into this cell, and walk away from him forever.

Daniel Lamb: Rot in hell, Leo.

(Daniel and Leo before their final battle.)

Leo Kasper: You think you can get rid of me? You goddamn runt! I'm the one who belongs here, who deserves to be here. You're nothing. Without me you'd be nothing.

Daniel Lamb: I just have to ignore you, Leo - you know it.

Leo Kasper: Ignore me? How about your wife's blood on your hands, can you ignore that?

Daniel Lamb: Shut up.

Leo Kasper: You made me. You put me in your own head for the sake of your pathetic career.

Daniel Lamb: Shut up!

Leo Kasper: And you cut your wife's throat right in front of her baby boy.

Daniel Lamb: Arrrrgh, I'll fucking kill you, you psycho piece of shit!

(Daniel and Leo after their final battle)

Leo Kasper: Fuck you, Danny - I won. Fuck you, Pickman. Fuck you, Whyte. Fuck the Project - I won. I WON!

(Dr. Whyte and Daniel back in the Asylum)

Dr. Whyte: Daniel. You can wake up now, Daniel. Dr. Lamb, can you hear me? Dr. Lamb? How do you feel? I followed the protocols exactly as you left them.

Daniel Lamb: How... How long was I out?

Dr. Whyte: You've been out for three weeks now. We... I took the decision to remove the Pickman Bridge. It was the only way we could be sure... We're very keen to resume work on the Project. Shall I gather the staff?

Daniel Lamb: Yes, just give me a moment...

(Daniel saw Leo in his second reflection, ending the cutscene.)

Trivia[]

  • The last room in the level, where Leo fights and defeats Daniel, is a callback to Manhunt, as it shares the same layout to Lionel Starkweather's office in Deliverance where James Earl Cash ultimately kills him. Both showdowns coincidentally take place inside a mansion. Leo also tells Daniel "you made me", which is backwards of what Starkweather says to Cash ("I made you") before dying by the death row inmate's hand.
  • The ending cutscene is different between console versions.
  • The Oil Drum execution in this mission is unique, as it uses a wine barrel instead of the rusty, metal one seen in the other levels. This is probably meant to fit into the manor setting of this episode, although the liquid inside is unchanged.
  • There is an unused, unique execution left in the game's files against Daniel using the Sub-Machine Gun. Leo would shoot his right knee from behind, knock him out with the hold of the gun and then empty the clip into his body.
    • Interestingly enough, the execution itself is not cut in the final game, as it actually still exists but simply in reverse; During the final confrontation, if Leo stands still long enough for Daniel to run behind him, a cutscene will trigger of Daniel actually doing the same animation but kills Leo instead.
  • There is unused audio where Leo would change his mind and tell Daniel to "Get your shit together, we're leaving" is left in the files, which wouldn't make sense at all, since he clearly wants to take him over.
  • In order to obtain 5 style points in this level in the PC version, the player must gain headshots on all Legion members or shoot every one of their heads on their corpses and perform one execution.
  • If you use oob glitch during the final battle and return to the previous room, you will be able to find Leo's clone there.
  • This is the only level to reuse an intro cutscene from another level - the same one from Personality Clash.
  • You can get the Shotgun and the Heavy Handgun in the level by using a trainer but they are not used in the level itself.
