The Assault Rifle is a powerful Red Class weapon that appears in both Manhunt games.

In Manhunt, it is based on the classic M16A2 U.S. Military assault rifle. In Manhunt 2, it is instead the updated M4A1 variant. In Manhunt, it takes just 4 body shots to kill a Hunter with it, making it the strongest automatic firearm in the game. Only the Sub-Machine Gun surpasses this weapon in terms of fire rate.

It is the main weapon of choice of the Cerberus in Manhunt. In Manhunt 2, it is used by The Bloodhounds, The Legion and The Watchdogs.

Trivia[]

Real life Assault Rifle

The real-world M16A2 used for Manhunt's Assault Rifle

  • The M16 or AR-15, the weapon the Assault Rifle is based on, was famously used during the Vietnam War and was adopted into the U.S. Army/Marines in the 1980s as the standard infantry rifle. Although still in military service today worldwide, it has been largely replaced by the M4 Carbine in 2005, and recently, the M7 rifle. Despite this, the M16 remains a popular rifle among enthusiasts due to its iconic appearance and history, alongside being commonly featured in older action movies and video games (not unlike the Franchi SPAS-12 for Manhunt's Shotgun).
  • Strangely, the protagonists pull the charging handle to cock the weapon during reloads. This is incorrect, as the cocking handle is actually located above the stock.
  • Being a military firearm like the Shotgun and one of the most powerful weaponry in the series, in Manhunt 2 when Daniel first acquires the Assault Rifle in Broadcast Interrupted, Leo will say to him it is a "man's weapon" and can he handle it, in which he responds with "bring it on". This only occurs in the PS2/PSP version, as this line is missing in the Wii/PC releases.
  • Similar to the Heavy Handgun and Sniper Rifle, rounds from the Assault Rifle are able to penetrate multiple Hunters in the line of fire.
  • The same model of the weapon as seen in Manhunt also appears in a cutscene for the Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas mission "Stowaway".
  • During the beta execution in Manhunt 2, Daniel Lamb shoots the rifle twice while hitting the enemy before shooting him in the head, but the head doesn’t explode.
  • The game files for Manhunt refer to the weapon as "Commando" and C_Commando", which stands for Colt Commando, an alternate name for Colt AR-15/CAR-15 assault rifle. For some reason, the Colt AR-15 is compact and short-lengthed while the Assault Rifle has a longer length much similar to the M16. It could mean that in the beta version of the game, this weapon was going to be based on the CAR-15 (Carbon 15), or simply an oversight by the research team, which led the modelers to name it "Commando".
